Dairy Farmer Click onto a new Web site, www.dairyfarmingtoday.org, created by America’s dairy producers through their checkoff investment.

Here you can learn how today’s dairy producers care for their animals and their land while growing healthy farming businesses for future generations. The site shows consumers the real story of dairy farming, including:

  • Life on the Farm — Visitors learn about dairy farming from the families who operate the nation’s 65,000 dairy farms. Farm profiles include photographs from the farm, and examples of innovative milk production and environmental practices.

  • Dairy Dictionary — Consumers can access this easy-to-use reference tool that covers everything from antibiotics to whey, helping them better understand dairy industry terms.

  • Caring for the Environment — Visitors learn how producers protect the land and natural resources by using modern technology, such as digesters to reduce manure odor and upgraded lighting to conserve energy.

  • Quality and Safety — Consumers learn how the United States maintains an antibiotic-free milk supply and the 10 steps dairy producers follow to ensure that quality, wholesome milk and dairy products are delivered from their farm to grocery store shelves.

    Butter Cow
Did you see the 2006 Butter Cow?

800 pounds of butter may not normally draw a crowd, but when it is sculpted into life size art, it’s a site nobody should miss.

Now in its ninth year, the butter cow sculpture has become one of the most popular attractions at the Utah State Fair. To finish the sculptor artists Barbara Westover and Debbie Brown will spend nearly five days molding, carving and shaping more than 700 pounds of sweet cream butter.

Barbara Westover has always had an interest in art and has carved wood for more than 30 years. Barbara and her husband, Craig, own CW Dairy in Lewiston, Utah. They are proud to be a part of the dairy industry and enjoy working with the land and the animals.

Debbie Brown has a degree in art and design from Brigham Young University. Most of her sculpting has been in stone and clay. She and her husband, Tim, live in Murray with their seven children.

Each year’s creation is different from the last. It’s the creative process that inspires these women to play with butter. It’s the friendship that keeps the team together, and it’s the love of sweet butter that keeps the tradition going.
