rbST Statement

Bovine somatotropin (bST) is a naturally occurring protein found in cow’s milk. bST helps young cattle grow and adult cows produce milk. A small amount of bST is present in all milk, including organic products.

In 1993, the FDA approved a synthetic form of bST for use in dairy cows. Recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) extends a cow’s lactation period, increasing milk production. This is a management tool for the local dairy farmer and in no way harms the cow or milk it produces.

The composition and nutritional value of milk from cows supplemented with rbST is essentially the same as milk without the supplement.

Dairy products are among the most tested and regulated foods in this country, and American dairy products are among the safest in the world. Dairy Farmers of Utah and the entire dairy industry support consumer choice in the dairy case, and some farmers, manufacturers and retailers will support different types of production that may or may not include the use of rbST. All milk is wholesome, safe, and nutritious and contains the same combination of nutrients needed for a healthy diet

Super Healthy Yogurt


Let’s kick-off June Dairy Month with tasty, easy and super healthy YOGURT!

Look at the yogurt section at your local grocery store and you’ll notice that it has almost taken over the entire dairy aisle! It only makes sense that a food with as many health benefits as yogurt be given prime real estate in your supermarket.

Here are 5 health benefits of having a yogurt a day:

1. Yogurt may help prevent osteoporosis—The combination of calcium and vitamin D in yogurt will build your bones better than calcium alone.

2. Yogurt may reduce the risk of high blood pressure—research from Harvard shows that people who get 3 servings of dairy a day reduce their risk of developing high blood pressure by 50%.

3. Yogurt with active cultures helps the gut—friendly bacteria can help your body digest lactose, prevent constipation and diarrhea, may prevent colon cancer and reduce the risk for stomach ulcers.

4. Yogurt with active cultures may curb the development of yeast infections—studies show that a yogurt a day can keep yeast infections away.
